Also a special mention for Phyl who completed her very first
training ride and enjoyed every moment, well done!Spring Mountain Ride through the eyes of a first time visitor.
Spring
Mountain was a bit of a milestone for my friends and I. It was
our first
time on our own, without the help of experienced endurance
riders, but they
were only a phone call away. I camped with Debbie (the
mystery MERC member)
and another friend Kim. Deb was riding Chaswyk
Ramazotti and Kim was riding
Bashan Phoenix. We also brought along
Chaswyck The Maverick for one of the
Splendacrest riders. After a lot
of set backs caused by a hoof abscess, I
finally got to do an 80k ride
on my boy, Bashan Memphis. This was his first
outing for nearly 12
months, so he did get a little bit excited in pre-ride
vetting, and
actually had a lower heart rate at the end of the ride than at
pre-ride. We got there in the end. We won't mention the
Rottweiler/scattering horses incident, we didn't fall off, that's all
that really matters!
A lot of people told us that Spring Mountain is
a challenging track.
They were right. We were also told stories about how
strapping buckets
froze overnight and were still frozen at the end of the
first leg. They
were almost right, it was minus 1 when we rode out in the
morning, not
quite cold enough to freeze the buckets, but I don't think it
was too
far off.
It was a reasonably difficult track. Its not one
where you can go like
a bat out of hell, but you are constantly having to
change your pace to
ride to the track conditions. Fortunately for us, our
40k training loop
at Amamoor Creek is more difficult, so we had a slight
advantage. We
set out with the aim of getting around the track in between
6 and 6 1/2
hours. We ended up doing it in 6 hours 10 minutes. Much to my
surprise, the CS came wandering through the camp calling my name. For a
moment I had a sinking feeling, had I missed a marker and been
disqualified? No. Much to my surprise, I was being advised to saddle
up my horse and be at the vetting area in 15 minutes for a Best
Conditioned workout. 6 hours 10 minutes was enough for me to place
second in Heavy Weight, Kim placed 4th in Middle Weight, and Deb
unfortunately got stuck behind a group of 6 other riders at the finish
line, and placed 11th.
We were all quite surprised at our
achievement. Our goal was to
complete, nothing else. Placing was a bonus.
It was also a great day
for Scott and Graham Ellison of Bashan Arabians,
with 3 horses they bred
completing (2 placing) and their two Chaswyck horses
completing. As it
was Big Country's 25th anniversary every rider
successfully completing
was awarded a rug, and the top 5 in each division
were awarded a saddle
cloth. A big thank you to BCER, it was a great
weekend, we all had a ball.

Copmanhurst 13th & 14th March
No. 127 Cathie Bruce and Lanamere Indianna 80km
- Written by Cathie Bruce
We had a really good time at Copmanhurst it wasn't without hiccups but turned out to
be a successful weekend all round. We enjoyed the hospitality and met some very
interesting characters, we were made to feel really welcome. Overall it was a lovely ride
base with plenty of ammenities and beautiful scenery.
It rained but not enough to cause any issues. Some of the track was soft and wet but the
majority was sandy and loamy underfoot. A third of the ride was roadside however the
remainder of the tracks were on undulating cattle properties. My favourite part of the ride
was the single file windy goat track that took us up over a mountain with views to the ride
base, at that point we knew we were close to home. I loved the amazing bush rock formations
that you wound around.
The club provided plenty of water for the horses, hay and carrots at a few checkpoints,
with even lollies, water and oranges provided for riders.
Overall it was a very enjoyable weekend we vetted through with flying colours which makes a
long trip definately worthwhile, considering we lost a step off our gooseneck not even out of
the front gate, struggling to get in and out of the tick gate and then having to be diverted due
to a horrific accident on the highway.
I would definately recommend attending Copmanhurst rides in the future, I will definately
be returning.
